Homeowners Insurance Information
Home Insurance in Idaho Falls, Island Park, Rigby, Rexburg, Pocatello, Shelley, Blackfoot and More
For many people, their most treasured possession is their home. The right insurance coverage can protect this valuable investment and its contents and provide peace of mind if something unfortunate happens.
Homeowners insurance offers financial protection against loss due to disasters, theft and accidents. This insurance coverage is often called a package policy since it includes both home protection and liability coverage.
What Coverage Does Homeowners Insurance Provide?
Standard homeowners insurance typically includes four essential types of coverage, including:
-
Coverage for the structure of the home—This coverage helps pay to repair or rebuild a home if it is damaged or destroyed by fire, hurricane, hail, lightning or other disaster listed in the policy. It generally will not pay for damage caused by a flood, earthquake or routine wear and tear.
-
Coverage for personal belongings—This coverage helps pay for furniture, clothing, sports equipment and other personal items that are stolen or destroyed by fire, hurricane or another insured disaster. Expensive items such as jewelry, furs and silverware may also be covered, but there are usually policy limits. Many people purchase a personal property endorsement or floater to insure these items for their appraised value.
-
Liability protection—This protection helps cover the costs of medical bills and lawsuits for bodily injury or property damage that policyholders or family members cause to other people. It may also pay for damage caused by pets. The policy’s liability portion can help pay for both the cost of defending the policyholder in court and any court awards—up to the policy’s limit. Some people also choose to purchase an additional umbrella or excess liability policy, which provides broader coverage, including claims for libel and slander.
-
Additional living expenses—This coverage helps pay for the costs of living away from home if a house is inhabitable due to damage from a fire, storm or another insured disaster. It may cover hotel bills, restaurant meals and other living expenses incurred while the home is being rebuilt.
How Much Coverage Do I Need?
A standard homeowners insurance policy typically offers protection against damage to your home’s structure, including fixtures, plumbing and heating. Generally, you should purchase enough insurance to cover the cost of rebuilding or repairing your home, minus the land cost.
You may also consider homeowners insurance if your home will be vacant due to a move or new construction. Empty homes can be vulnerable to losses from vandalism and other mishaps.
What Does Coverage Cost?
Homeowners insurance depends on various factors, including your home’s location, your home’s price and the cost to rebuild it, the desired amount of coverage, and your home’s age and condition. Our agents can help you get the policy that fits your needs and budget.
