Checklist for a Safe Road Trip

Inspect your car to make sure it’s mechanically safe. Make sure your tires are inflated, have proper tire pressure and check that tread depth is in a normal range. Double-check that your jack is in your vehicle and that you have a spare tire or donut if possible. Get your oil changed if it’s almost due and check all fluid levels, making sure to refill any that are low. Finally, ensure that your battery holds a charge and check all lights and signals. 

 Check the weather in advance of your trip. Be sure to check not just the weather at your destination but at several points in between. Summer is a prime time for hurricanes and storms, as well as other weather patterns, so you’ll want to know what you’re driving into before you leave.

 Leave early to give yourself extra time. With so many people out on the road, the traffic may cause significant delays. By giving yourself extra time, you won’t feel the need to rush to make it to your destination on time.

 Prepare an emergency bag. Include essential tools like a flashlight, blanket, first-aid kit, etc. Additionally, some snacks and water are a great idea as well.

 Keep children occupied. If you are traveling with children, make sure they have things to keep them entertained so they won’t distract the driver. Games, books and music are good choices for all ages.

 Take breaks. If you feel drowsy or impatient, it’s a good time to pull over and take a break. Try taking a walk, stretching or grabbing a coffee before continuing your drive.
